ATAC SUMMER 2022 "ON THE INSIDE" WRITING CONTEST

RULES AND GUIDLINES
ELIGIBILITY:
Contest is open to any currently incarcerated person in the Arizona Department of Corrections,
Rehabilitation, and Reentry.
CRITERIA:
- Submissions must be original and unpublished.
- Submissions must be post-marked on or before August 31, 2022.
- Submissions must contain two complete Essays/writings:
- One (1) Writing Category One; and
- One (1) Writing Category Two
- All entries must follow the rules in this document.
CONTEST CATEGORIES:
Category One (Required):
- Topic: Why does ADCRR Need Independent, External Oversight?
- Length: 500-1500 words
- Perspective: Third-person objective
- Style: Persuasive
- Citations: For any cited material
- Works Cited: For any cited material
Category Two (Required):
- Topic Option 1: What Can I Teach the World from My Prison Experience?
- Topic Option 2: My Rehabilitation: How Has ADCRR Helped or Hurt?
- Topic Option 3: Public Perception versus the Reality of Prison?
- Length: 750-2000 words
- Perspective: Author’s Choice
- Style: Author’s Choice
- Citations: For any cited material
- Works Cited: For any cited material
TIMELINE:
- Entries must be received (or postmarked) by August 31, 2022, 11:59PM MST.
- All submission that score at least 60 points in the Technical Criteria areas will be
considered a semi-finalist and will be posted on the ATAC website by September 15, 2022
for public voting. - The close of voting will be September 30, 2022. 11:59 PM EST.
- The winners of the competition will be notified by mail on October 5, 2022.
- Contestants may opt to have their submission posted anonymously
JUDGING:
- Contest entries will be judged based on three categories:
- Technical (20%)*
- Content – ATAC Panel (40%)
- Content – Public Vote (40%)
- Technical criteria areas (Total of 100 possible points):
- Voicing (30 pts)
- Spelling (10 pts)
- Grammar (20 pts)
- Punctuation (10 pts)
- Style adherence (30 pts)
- Any quoted, paraphrased, or asserted reference material must be cited inline
and in a works cited page. - Additional 10 bonus points for every reference that is properly cited inline and in a Works Cited section of the submission.
SUBMITION CRITERIA:
General Criteria:
- Each contestant will submit two complete writings.
- One writing from category one
- One writing from category two
- Submissions will have a cover page for each writing that contains the following information:
- Author’s Full Name
- ADCRR Number
- Address
- Title of writings
- Word count
- All submissions must contain a completed Entry Application and Release and Waiver signed by the
author of the work - All contest entries must be neatly handwritten or typed and must meet the following criteria:
- Entries must be in good taste, easy to read, use proper grammar and punctuation, and
correct spelling - Do not include illustrations or pictures
- Submit the entries via mail or electronically
- Any deviation from these rules could be the basis for disqualification
Handwritten Submissions Criteria:
- Handwritten submissions must meet these criteria:
- Print: Printed clearly (no cursive)
- Spacing: Double-spaced (Every other line on lined paper)
- Format: May use front and back of paper
- Margins: Use one-inch margins all around
- Indent: Indent each paragraph 3 to 5 spaces
- Title: The title of the work should appear on the top of every page (Front side only if
printing on both sides of paper) - Page Number: Every page must be clearly numbered
Typed Submissions Criteria:
- Typed Submissions must meet these criteria:
- Font: Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri, or Georgia
- Size: 10-12 point type
- Spacing: Double-spaced
- Format: WORD, Google DOC, PDF, or ODF document.
- Margins: Use one-inch margins all around
- Indent: Indent each paragraph 3 to 5 spaces
- Title: The title of the work should appear on every printed page
- Page Number: Every page must be clearly numbered
AWARDS:
- 1st place: $100
- 2nd place: $50
- 3rd place: $25
- Honorable Mention (up to three): $15
- Winners in each category will receive a printed certificate. Honorable Mentions will also receive
a certificate.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Each submission must contain:
- Signed and dated Entry Application and Release and Waiver forms.
- The Entry Application and Release and Waiver forms must be submitted along with the writings.
