Restoring Public Trust In The Arizona Department of Corrections
Our Mission
The mission of ATAC is to restore public trust in the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry (ADCRR) through the formation and implementation of a citizens’ oversight and advisory committee (COAC) and corrections ombuds in the legislative and executive branches of the Arizona government, respectively. The implementation of the COAC and ombuds will institute transparency and accountability in the ADCRR and increase public safety while ensuring proper care for the incarcerated.
Areas of Focus
Arizonans for Transparency and Accountability in Corrections focuses on conducting research, analysis and reports, public-awareness campaigns, community organizing, and legislative outreach to create a robust. independent citizen-lead oversight and advisory committee and correctional ombuds to ensure the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry is meeting its statutory mandates.

Why does Arizona need oversight?
The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry is the third largest executive agency in the state government and the only such agency without independent oversight.
Human Lives
The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry houses over 40,000 incarcerated men and women throughout the state.
Massive Budget
The annual budget appropriation for the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry consumes over $1.2 billion dollars each year.

Citizens' oversight and Ombuds model
ATAC is a non-partisan organization working with lawmakers to develop and implement oversight legislation.
The ATAC model proposes a Citizens’ Oversight and Advisory Board within the Arizona Legislature and an Ombuds in the Arizona Governor’s office.
The ATAC model creates effective and responsive oversight, ensures accurate reporting, and provides a framework to advise the government on improvements in the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry.
